Update pm/notification messages without reloading phpBB page

I've read somewhere that someone would like to have a responsive result about messages in phpBB:
without reloading page, would be nice to see notifications come out if there are news.
Someone proposed to do the joke with some sort of NodeJS mod ...
I do not see any necessity to use other than pure Javascript/php instead ...
I would like to start as i can this joke if someone will not explain me why i should use JS libraries instead then pure JS/Php to do things like this ...
